Zao Onsen Large Open-Air Bath

This is one of the three highest hot springs in Ou and the base of the Zao Onsen ski resort. The large open-air bath is located at the far end of the Zao Onsen Hot Spring resort, and consists of four staircase levels, which together cover an area of 100 tatami mats. The two upstream tiers are for women and the two downstream tiers are for men. In total, 200 people can bathe at the same time.

The Zao Grand Open-air Bath, located deep in the mountains a few minutes’ drive from the hot spring resort, is a large open-air bath with a wild atmosphere that is representative of Zao.

The stairway-style open-air bath has four tiers and is divided into two sections, one for women and one for men. Surrounded by trees, the murmuring of the river and birdsong provide pleasant background music.
