The Dewa Sanzan (Three Mountains of Dewa) is the general name for the three mountains of Gassan, Haguro, and Yudono, located in the Murayama and Shonai regions of Yamagata Prefecture. Shugendo, and still attract many ascetic practitioners and worshippers today.
The three mountains of Dewa are believed to symbolize the past (Gassan), the present (Haguro), and the future (Yudono), and each of them has its own shrine: Gassan Shrine, Dewa Shrine, and Yudono Shrine.
